Wedding films: DIY or hire a pro? Guildford Wedding Photographer

May 22, 2020 | Guildford, Surrey Weddings, Wedding Film, Wedding video, Weddings

As an experienced Guildford Wedding Photographer & Videographer I often wonder how often wedding couples just thrust a video camera into a pals hand with an instruction to “just get the best bits”. Well I’m sure they do. We did. And do you know what…… you will never ever get around to ……..

1) getting all the clips together (it is seriously overwhelming)

2) editing it (this bit is pretty overwhelming too)

3) wondering if you can do anything to the sound or delete someones head out of the way or

4) watch it before your 10th wedding anniversary! I speak from experience.

Here is a short edit of a recent wedding film. Recorded at the stunning barns at Farbridge, near Chichester, West Sussex.

When we got married I didn’t realise what wedding films and videography was all about. I presumed it was just someone recording your day and stitching it all back together. I’ll clear this up now. It isn’t. Or rather. The beautiful cinematic films I record of your wedding day are nothing like this.

I started to think about my filming in detail when Jessica from the Italian Dream wedding planning service asked me to record a film about Surrey Wedding Videos and film. Or ‘weddingography’. It’s a thing you know!

Filming a wedding is an art. If you are looking to capture the whole day – word for word – scene by scene. Then I am not your girl. I capture beautiful moments, with a little bit of audio from your day and weave it all back together with complementing music, that you can help choose. I create a slowed down, memorising, cinematic experience. 15 – 20 minutes of memories that will last you a life time.

Surrey Photographer & Film Maker

I have had a few people worry that with a photographer, and maybe a second shooter, that there isn’t room for a videographer too. They think I may turn up with a tripods, wires and huge great TV style camera. But all I need is me and my little camera. There really is no intrusion on your day at all. (Or you can just book me. I can photography and film your wedding at the same time. But more about that later on!)

Legacy & Heirloom Films

My little girl often sits and watches as I edit film recorded from weddings all over Surrey. From small intimate ceremonies at Guildford Registry Office with a do at the pub over the road afterwards, to stately homes with all the ‘bells and whistles’. It doesn’t matter how big or small your wedding. She is always in awe. The beautiful wedding couple, flowing dresses, twirling bridesmaids, colourful flowers. She is mesmerised. ‘Again! Again! Again!’ And she doesn’t even know the people in the film. Imagine, just for a moment, how you and your family will feel sitting down to watch a short film of your glorious day. Year after year.

You can obviously spend a lot of money on a wedding film. There are some brilliant videographers out there who will record you a blockbuster epic film. And there are some out there who charge very little (think friend and the videocamera again!). I am somewhere in the middle. I make my Surrey Wedding Packages as accessible as possible. Always happy to provide bespoke quotes to just capture the moments you want. Whether that be just the ceremony or from the first minute of your big day to last thing at night. All my packages are detailed on my website. There are no hidden costs. Nothing to download. You can just take a look!

But the best thing……… I can film and photograph your wedding. It’s quite a skill! I am only one person so we have to prioritise. Would you prefer more film or more photographs? It’s totally up to you. There is plenty of time to chat about it beforehand. Either down at your local pub (when they reopen) or virtually on zoom or FaceTime (BTW there is a 50% discount voucher at the end of my film below!)

Online Wedding Fair

So here is my film for The Online Wedding Fair with The Italian Dream wedding planning service. There have been so many fantastic suppliers lined up over the week. So checkout the IGTV posts to see the top tips. If you are a newly engaged Surrey, Hampshire, London or Sussex couple you will love to hear from our experts. Claire Beminster chatting through photography & beautiful wedding albums, Toni talking about Wedding Makeup and Hair, Iris & Co discussing wedding flowers, the lovely ladies from Matchimony working out your wardrobe, London Paper Crafts displaying beautiful tactile luxury stationery and Rica from Alchemy of Sugar talking all things cake. What a creative line up for all your Surrey Wedding needs! What a team.

So are you convinced? A wedding film is a beautiful heirloom. Not just a scramble of footage from friends phones. A cinematic combination of love, life and everything inbetween . One you will always have. There to show you the bits you may have missed when you were busy getting married rather than busy being a wedding guest, there to refresh your grandparents memory when things get a little hazy, there to show any children you might go on to have. Leaving a legacy for years to come.

Newly engaged? Waiting to get married?

You will be relieved to know I am much more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it (I hope I have managed to edit out the swearing!). Would you like to chat to me about photographing or filming your Guildford Wedding? Please get in touch. I would love to hear from you, Hester x

Quite simply stunning!!! You have made me think about getting married more than ever, and there is absolutely no doubt, in my mind, how vital having a videographer is! Your work is beautiful and a compliment to any Bride & Grooms day!

So beautiful Hester! I really wish you’d been around when we got married – our videographer didn’t even turn up! Our friends kindly filmed bits and pieces but definitely not the same. Would have loved something like this to remember our day.

Ah Hester, this is so beautiful! I so regret not having a videographer at my wedding, if only I had known you then… I would love to be able to sit down and show my own children a little piece of their history.  Your work is stunning x

I love films, my best friend had a videographer at her wedding and theres something about watching that back and seeing those (moving!) moments that you just can’t quite get with just pictures alone. Beautiful post! and to be able to photograph and film, that’s a skill!
