Advice from Surrey Headshot photographer
One of the first questions clients ask before a headshot or brand photography session is:
“What should I wear?”
The good news is you don’t need a completely new wardrobe. The aim is simply to choose clothes that feel comfortable, reflect your personality and photograph beautifully.
Here are a few simple guidelines to help you feel confident on the day.
1. Wear Something That Feels Like You
Your headshot should represent the real you, not a version that feels overly styled or unfamiliar.
If you’re a relaxed, creative business owner, a stiff suit might not feel natural. Equally, if you work in a more formal environment, a structured look might work perfectly.
The most important thing is that your clothing feels authentic to your personality and brand.
2. Choose Simple, Timeless Pieces
Clothing that photographs best tends to be simple and well fitted.
Good options include:
- blazers
- knitwear
- shirts or blouses
- simple dresses
- structured tops
Avoid anything overly busy, heavily patterned or with large logos, as these can distract from your face.
3. Think About Colour
Colours can make a big difference in photographs.
Generally, solid colours work best, particularly tones that complement your skin tone and brand colours.
Soft neutrals, deep blues, greens, rust tones and pastels often photograph beautifully.
If your brand has a particular colour palette, it can be lovely to reflect that subtly in your outfit choices.
4. Bring a Few Options
For most headshot sessions I recommend bringing two or three outfit options.
This gives us flexibility and allows you to create a small variety of images during the session.
Sometimes the outfit you’re least sure about ends up being the one that photographs best.
5. Consider Layers and Texture
Layers can add interest and variety to your images.
For example:
- a blazer over a top
- a cardigan or knit
- a scarf or simple accessory
Textures such as linen, knitwear or soft cotton also tend to photograph beautifully.
6. Keep Accessories Simple
Accessories can add personality, but keeping them simple works best.
Delicate jewellery, a watch or subtle details can work beautifully, while very large statement pieces can sometimes distract from the portrait.
7. Don’t Forget the Details
Small details can make a big difference in photographs.
Before your session it’s worth checking:
- clothes are well pressed
- shoes are clean (if they’ll be visible)
- nails are neat
- hair feels comfortable and natural
The goal is simply to feel polished but still like yourself.
Final Thoughts
The most important thing to wear to your headshot session is confidence and comfort.
When you feel relaxed and like yourself, it always shows in the photographs.
If you’re unsure what to bring, I’m always happy to help you choose outfits before the shoot.
