Brand photography isn’t something most business owners think about very often.
Many people book a shoot, receive their images, update their website and social media… and then don’t think about new photos again for several years.
But businesses grow and evolve. And when your brand imagery no longer reflects where your business is now, it can quietly hold you back.
So how often should you actually update your brand photos?
A good rule of thumb: every 1–2 years
For most businesses, updating brand photography every one to two years works well.
This doesn’t necessarily mean a full rebrand or completely different style of images. Often it’s simply about refreshing your content so it reflects where your business is today.
Over time, things naturally change:
• your services evolve
• your confidence grows
• your brand message becomes clearer
• your audience shifts
New photography helps your online presence stay aligned with those changes.
When your photos no longer reflect your business
Sometimes the biggest sign it’s time for new brand photos is simply that your current images don’t feel like you anymore.
Perhaps you’ve changed direction in your business.
Maybe your work has become more refined or you’re working with a different type of client.
Or you might simply feel that your current images don’t represent the way you want your brand to feel.
When that happens, updated photography can bring everything back into alignment.
When you’re creating more content
Another time businesses benefit from new brand photography is when they begin showing up online more consistently.
If you’re posting regularly on Instagram, writing blogs or updating your website, having a library of images makes creating content much easier.
Instead of relying on the same handful of photos, you have a collection of images that work across your website, social media and marketing.
When you’ve grown in confidence
One of my favourite reasons clients come back for another shoot is because they feel more confident in their business.
The first time someone has brand photos taken can feel a little unfamiliar.
By the second or third time, people often feel far more relaxed in front of the camera and much clearer about how they want to present their brand.
The images naturally evolve as the business grows.
A brand shoot isn’t just about photos
Refreshing your brand photography isn’t only about updating your website with new images.
It’s often a chance to pause, reflect on how your business has grown and think about where you’re heading next.
Many clients treat it as a kind of creative reset for their brand.
An opportunity to capture where their business is now and create content that supports the next stage of their work.
A simple question to ask yourself
If you’re unsure whether it’s time for new brand photos, ask yourself one question:
Do my current images still represent my business today?
If the answer is yes, that’s wonderful.
But if they feel slightly out of step with where you are now, a new set of photographs can make a huge difference.
Because when your imagery reflects the real personality behind your business, showing up online becomes much easier.
